For the last 8 years we have only been a high-street retailer, a bricks and mortar retailer. This has always been our dream and to be honest always will be our passion. However, we all know that the world in which we are living is changing at a rate we've not experienced before and the way in which people shop is changing.
The high street experience is deteriorating all over the country and who knows what role a 'Shop' will play in society in the future. Its something we discuss all the time as its kind of critical to our future success.
We are of the opinion that the successful shops will be more specialist rather than generalist and product knowledge, experience and the whole in store experience will be the critical success factors in the survival of high-street shops in the future.
Our shop is a mix, a specialist primarily in Rackets and Running and working on Hockey and Rugby and we balance that out with being generalist/pick-up in other sports we stock. This has always been our strategy and we will always strive to achieve this.
Our main issue now is ONLINE. Recently we have been asked why we don't sell online.... Our answer is always, who the hell would buy from us compared to Amazon, Wiggle, Pro Direct. It will be a waste of time and resource, we will focus that resource on our in-store environment.
Over the past few months more and more people have said, but we want to see what you are stocking before we come in. For example from customer A, We see on Instagram you sell stance socks but what designs do you sell in particular? I want to see what you have before we come down.
Here is our dilemma, Are Transactional websites a must or would a website showing what we stock in-store suffice.
As years go on more and more money will be spent on-line, so our question is.......
In the future, will the high street shop be a thing of the past or better still what role do you think a shop will play in the future Shopping world....
Thoughts very much welcomed as we are going round in circles.
